The Bismarck palm is a striking and gigantic palm tree with massive blue silver-green leaves. When young it produces dark red leaves. Each frond is about 4-5 feet long, costapalmate, stiff, heavy and upright. There are about 20-30 fronds on the massive palm. They create almost a spherical crown. The leaf stems are covered with small spines.
Its trunk is sturdy, smooth, often swollen at base and grey in color. Young palms have a trunk that is covered with old leaf bases.
The Bismarck palmĀ can grow 60 feet in height.
These palms are dioecious species, male and female flowers on separate plants. The flower stalks are four feet long bearing cream flowers. The Bismarchia nobilis produces brown, round, 1-2 inch in diameter, not-eatable fruits.
